UpDown Hostel

Constantin Eduard is a 22 year old multidisciplinary creator working across mural painting, drawing, and the construction of objects and small scale pavilions. His practice bridges artistic expression and Architecture, with a focus on materiality and hands-on experimentation. In his work, he aims to balance creativity and functionality, exploring techniques and forms to develop original and cohesive projects. He is also an architecture student at the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning in Timișoara, part of the Politehnica University of Timișoara.

Located in Timișoara, UpDown Hostel is built on the captivating architectural concept of the theater, inviting guests to experience the dual roles of actor and spectator. The design embraces a playful and surprising atmosphere, utilizing a raumplan layout that creates dynamic visual connections and diagonal perspectives across multiple levels. This spatial configuration blurs the lines between interior and exterior spaces, constantly shifting the user's viewpoint. The building’s façades act as theatrical masks; a rigid, white false front hides the true complexity of the structure, where balconies detach and a gradient of straight, curved, and heavily glazed elements unfolds. Contrast heavily defines the spatial experience, seamlessly moving from the bright, luminous ground floor to a vibrant, dimly lit 'Dionysian' underground tavern that operates with its own distinct energy. To foster a strong sense of community, the private sleeping areas are deliberately minimalist yet comfortable, encouraging guests to mingle in the generous common spaces. These flexible areas host thematic nights, concerts, and podcasts, transforming the hostel into a lively urban landmark and an active meeting hub not just for travelers, but for the entire city.
